The X Factor finalists release their charity single Hero to support Help for Heroes
They're usually rivals competing for one of TV's most sought after prizes. But The X Factor finalists have put their ambitions to one side to release Hero, a new charity single to support wounded servicemen and women.
There were emotional scenes on Saturday night's show as the remaining ten acts, plus previous finalists Girlband and Bad Lashes performed the single for the first time, in front of a studio audience which included the service personnel they're supporting.
"That was terrific, very moving," said host Dermot O'Leary, after the final notes of the song, originally made famous by Mariah Carey, were heard.
Simon Cowell and the team behind the hit ITV show believe that collectively the finalists are a group with the power and opportunity to do something for the greater good.
Proceeds from the record will be divided equally between Help for Heroes – a charity that provides support for wounded servicemen and women, and the Poppy Appeal.
Co-founder of Help For Heroes Bryn Parry says: "Everyone at Help For Heroes is thrilled to hear that The X Factor is supporting our boys and girls. We hope the public will do their bit to make this a hit single and demonstrate that we really care."
There's little doubt that Hero will hit number one after hitting record stores on Monday (October 27) - and a huge response was anticipated when a download of the single became available from midnight after Saturday's show.
