On current form Andy Murray is the best in the world
Forget the world rankings – Great Britain's Andy Murray is currently the BEST tennis player in the world.
He might find himself still trailing behind Rafa Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic on the rolling ATP rankings, but however you look at the state of the game the Scot is currently head and shoulders above ever other rival.
Take prize money, the holy grail where professional tennis is concerned, where Murray's earnings since July have soared to over $2 million , a quarter of a million more than Federer; almost twice as much as Nadal and more than three times the amount his old friend Djokovic has earned.
Even on ranking points, which will eventually decide his place in the world, he has scooped 2,180 out of a possible 3,420 compared in the same time Nadal 1,800, Federer 1,655 and Djokovic 1,325.
In that time he has won two successive Masters tournaments back-to-back in Cincinnati and Madrid a spell spoiled only by his miserable Olympic performance. His only problem at present is that he is going so far in every other tournament that burn out is the biggest threat to his triumphant march through the tennis courts of the world.
Not that he tired himself out too much in defending his St. Petersburg Open title in Russia on Sunday when he took less than an hour and lost only TWO games in defeating first time finalist Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan and no one could take him to a deciding set.
