The Metropolitan Police, the Crown Prosecution Service and Hackney Council are organising a run-and-cycle event from Hackney to Montpellier to raise money for two East London youth charities.

The "Hackney a la Med" event is the brainchild of Detective Inspector Jonathan Benton of Hackney Borough Police.

An 18-strong team will run and cycle non-stop from Hackney, East London, to the Mediterranean coast. The team will first run a relay from the steps of Hackney Town Hall on 18th September 2008 to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France.

They will then cycle from Paris to Montpellier on the south coast of France.

The event is expected to be completed in 72 hours.
